VisionAIR Trials: User Requirements
Part 1: Services
Part 2: General Questions
Technology Literacy
Platform related questions
Part 1: Services
The goal
here was to identify which services were estimated the most and the least
important by potential end users.
It becomes
visible that Emergency and health related services are assessed the most useful
as well as general civil services, while home control and psychological support
services are considered slightly less important.

Part 2: General Questions
The next
part of the end user questionnaire collected demographic data.
1. What is your age?
Since the
age of the questioned potential end users is one of our two man distinction
criteria in the evaluation of the inquiry results, it is important to have a
closer look at the answers. It shows that the age structure of the four
localities is significantly different:
- In Bremen a high number of students were questioned, therefore the group between 20 and 30 years is over-represented against the average.
- Maroussi has even a rate of one third of people under 20, because a lot of school pupils took part in the inquiry.
- In Bari, the Majority of the questioned users were in the upper age groups of 40 years and above.
- Kenniswijk has even an older average with over one third of inquiry participants above 50 years. But since Kenniswijk has collected the smallest number of questionnaires, this has reduced influence on the overall statistics.
2. What is your gender?
Maroussi is the only inquiry place with a female majority.
3. Educational level
Again, the
situation is different according to the localization of end users:
- In Bari the rate of University degrees is higher
- Kenniswijk has a higher rate of Technical degrees, but no Master's/PhD degrees
5. How many persons live in your house (including you)?
While the
overall summary looks equally distributed, the local differences are
significant:
BIBA
Ø 2.6
|
DTA
Ø 3.4
|
TNO
Ø 3.3
|
TUE
Ø 1.7
|
6. a) Are there any Elderly or Disabled persons living in the family?
7. Do you use your house as an office (personal company or working at home)?
Bremen is
the only place with nearly 50% "yes" votes; this may be due to the fact how the
many students in the Bremen inquiry valued their homework here. All others have
a "yes" rate of around 20%.

Technology Literacy
8. How often do you use a computer?
Bari is
here the exception with about 80% daily computer users. More significant is the
age pattern showing in the answers to this question:
under 20
|
20-30
|
30-40
|
40-50
|
more than 50
|
The age
pattern showing here is characteristic for virtually all answers to questions
regarding technology literacy: while the youngest group below 20 years is not
yet completely accustomed to technological issued, people between 20 and 30 are
very trained and competent. With every decade upwards in age, this competency
decreases again constantly.
9. Do you have a computer at home?
Two
deviations from the average can be observed here:
- Kenniswijk reports less than 20%computer owners
- Less than 50% of the people over 50 have a computer - the age pattern as described above is followed here as well.
10. If yes, how often do you upgrade it?
The rule
here is: the younger, the more due are people to upgrade more often.
11. Have you ever used the Internet?
12. Do you have an Internet connection at home?
13. What is the type of Internet connection that you use at home?
There are
significant differences regarding internet connection type by place of inquiry:
14. What is the speed of your Internet connection?
In
accordance with the previous question, Kenniswijk represents again the
exception with its 58% rate of 512+ kbps internet connections.
15. What is the charging method you prefer?
Kenniswijk
is the only place where flat rate is clearly preferred. Interestingly, between
20 and 50 scalable charging is preferred, but below 20 and over 50 flat rate is
preferred.
16. What is the monthly amount you are willing to pay for Internet Subscription?
17. a) Have you ever bought a product or service online? (right)
  b) If no: If you had the possibility to buy online would you do it? (left)
The
above-mentioned age pattern shows here again.
18. Do you use the Internet to download...
Younger
people have a slightly higher affinity to movies, no other age pattern is
recognisable.
19. What is your degree of trust worthiness regarding computers/IT?
This
outcome is observable more or less the same through all ages, with a tendency
of less trust with higher age.
20. Do you have a TV set? (right)
21. If yes, what technology does your TV support? (left)
In the age
group over 40, more people live without TV set (up to 25%)
Every
single Municipality has individual characteristics here:
22. How often do you watch TV?
23. What is the program type that mostly interests you?
The
following observations could be made in the answers to this question:
- The age group below 20 is mainly interested in movies and serials.
- The older the group, the more important information programs become.
- Movies find their main interest in the age groups below 40, then decreasing
- News are the most important item for all groups over 20
- Documenatry Films become more important with higher age
- Local Events/News as well
- Serials become less important with higher age
24. Have you ever used Interactive TV?
25. Do you have a DVD player?
Considered
by age groups, the percentage of "yes" answers decreases from over 50% (up to
30 years) to about 25% (more than 50 years).
26. How many movies do you watch per month?
People
under 20 watch more movies, no other age pattern is recognisable.
27. Form those movies that you watch monthly, how many do you pay?
A clear
coherence can be stated here: the younger the group, the more of the monthly
watched movies are paid.
28. Have you ever used VoD service?
29. Do you use any other electronic devices?
The answers
to this question can be best visualized in their age relations. Electronic
agendas/organisers reach ca. 25% in the group of the 40-50 year old, Game
consoles are possessed by 80% in the group below 20 years.
30. Have you ever used Home control service to remotly control your Home aplliances?
In
Maroussi, 35% say to have already used Home Control; another outcome that could
be assessed with scepticism, is that nearly 50% of the youngest age group claim
to have done so.

Platform related questions
31. When do you think these technologies will be available? In the next...
The group
below 20 years expects such a platform within one year. No bigger consistency
can be observed throughout the other age groups. The differences of the four
inquiry locations are more significant:
32. In your opinion, what will be the cost for purchasing such a service?
33. If the cost is affordable, would you be willing to use such a service (platform) at home?
In Bremen
only 41% of all people showed themselves interested, while in Bari it were 88%.
34. Assuming that you want to purchase such a platform. From where would you purchase it?
35. Do you prefer the system to be installed by ...
People over
40 like it much less to install the system on their own (5-10%).
36. In your opinion, what is the greatest benifit from using broadband services
Besides the
question, if "to be more dependent from technology" can be regarded a benefit,
the following characteristics turned out:
- Freetime and telework are topics more strongly expected by the 30-40 year old.
- Telework isn't a very much expected benefit in Bremen.
- People in Kenniswijk speak few of freetime or an enjoyable time at home.
37. Would you be interested to be a trial user of the VisionAIR platform at your place?
The
willingness chart by Location:
59% Kenniswijk
45% Bari
28% Maroussi
19% Bremen
39. Up to which fixed amount are you willing to pay to participate in a trial that is going to give the above mentioned services?
In Kenniswijk, nearly 50% declared themselves ready
to pay up to 50 € per month.
